Nothing we make is rolled, compressed or boxed.
A mattress in a box has been squashed to a fifth of its height and left like that for weeks. Ours arrive exactly as they were built, carried in by two people, unwrapped and placed in the room you want.
Two people, room of choice
Delivered flat, carried upstairs, unwrapped and placed. Packaging taken away. Delivery is included in the price on every chapter.
Made for you in 10–14 days
Every mattress is made to order in Yorkshire, with the build date on the label. That is also why we can offer Medium or Firm tension at no charge.
The old one goes
We take your old mattress away on the same visit for £30, to a recycler who strips the steel and the foam. It is never resold.
Every layer, with its density. On every page.
Most brands tell you a mattress is "premium memory foam". We tell you it is 60 kg/m³, 5 cm deep, over 2,000 springs of 1.7 mm wire. It is what a reviewer would measure, so we publish it before you buy.
- Foam density in writingEvery foam layer is specified in kg/m³ and hardness. It is the single number that decides whether a mattress is still good in year eight.
- Spring wire gauge stated1.7 to 2.0 mm wire, 1,000 or 2,000 pockets, zones where they help. Not "advanced spring technology".
- No fibreglass, everA woven fire barrier instead. Every build is tested to BS 7177 low hazard for homes.
- The same drawing on every chapterSame scale, same labels, so you can compare two builds honestly instead of reading two adverts.
Four questions. No firmness numbers.
Tell us who the bed is for and what has changed, and we will name the chapter. It takes thirty seconds. Saving the result to your email is optional.
Chapter, a mattress in a box, or a traditional maker?
Each is right for someone. Here is the honest version of the difference, including where the other two win.
| Chapter | A typical mattress in a box | A traditional maker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it arrives | Flat, by two people, unwrapped and placed in the room you choose | Rolled and vacuum-packed in a box; one courier; you unbox, wait one to three days | Flat, usually by the retailer's two-person team |
| Made to order | Yes, in 10 to 14 days, build date on the label | No: made in bulk, boxed and warehoused | Often yes, four to eight weeks |
| Tension choice | Medium or Firm at no charge; split tension in king sizes | No: one feel for everyone | Yes, usually two or three tensions |
| Foam densities published | Every layer, on the product page | Rarely; "high density" without a number | Sometimes on request |
| Natural fillings, stitched pillow-top, steel edge | On the chapters that need them | Cannot be rolled, so no | Yes, at the top end |
| Where it is made | Yorkshire, England | Varies; often overseas for the standard ranges | Mostly the UK |
| Fibreglass | Never; woven fire barrier | Sometimes in the cheapest imports; check the label | No |
| Trial and returns | 14-day return right, 30-night swap, Soft Top first | 100-night trial is the norm; its cost is in the price | Often no trial; 14-day right only |
| Guarantee | 10 years on the build | Ten years is typical | Five to ten years |
| Sales | One price everywhere; a dated launch price, no invented "was" | A permanent sale against a high reference price | Seasonal sales |
| Best for | A specific build, a tension choice, or someone to carry it in | The lowest delivered price for a decent medium mattress | Hand-made natural mattresses without a price ceiling |
"Typical" describes the category, not one named brand; check any brand's own spec sheet before you buy from them, and from us.
We have none yet. We would rather say so.
Chapter opens early 2027. Until real customers have slept on these for thirty nights there is nothing honest to show you here, so we are not going to show you anything. The first hundred customers get the launch price and, after night thirty, one question: how is it? We publish the answers, good and bad, unedited.
If you want to see what we are promising in the meantime, read the swap and the guarantee, in plain words, or the rules we build to.
"I started this because buying a mattress had become a choice between a firmness number on a box and a sale that never ends, and neither told you what you were actually buying. So we named the mattresses after the moments that change what you need from a bed, and we print the spec sheet instead of adjectives. If that sounds like how you would want to buy one, we built it for you."

What every Chapter is built to.
Densities in writing
Every foam layer is specified by density and hardness on the spec sheet, and the spec sheet is on the product page. It is the difference between this and a £299 mattress from the same factory.
No fibreglass, anywhere
The single most common one-star review in this category. We use a woven fire barrier instead, and every build is tested to BS 7177.
Words we do not use
Orthopaedic. Cool gel. Revolutionary. Engineered. Clinically. If a word does not describe a material or a measurement, it is not on the label.
Same price everywhere
The price on this site is the price on Amazon and eBay. There is no permanent 40 per cent off, because there is no made-up price to take it off.
Plain answers to the questions people actually search.
What a 100-night trial really costs you (and what to look for instead)
Free returns are not free; they are in the price. How trials are funded, what happens to returned mattresses, what a trial does and does not tell you, and the alternative that costs less.
What mattress should an Airbnb host buy? The bed is the review
A rental mattress is slept on by a hundred strangers a year who write reviews. What to buy, how to protect it, when to replace it, and the two rules experienced hosts follow.
Which bed base for a pocket-sprung mattress: slats, divans and the 7 cm rule
The base is the most common reason a good mattress fails early and the most common reason a guarantee is refused. Sprung divan, platform-top, slats, ottoman, adjustable: what each does to the feel, and the two rules that keep the guarantee.
Cooling mattress toppers: which ones actually cool, and which just say so
Most "cooling" toppers are memory foam with a blue cover. What a topper can and cannot fix, the materials that genuinely run cool, what to spend, and when a topper is the wrong answer.
The best mattress for a sofa bed: depth and size first, then everything else
Sofa bed" covers four different things, and only one of them takes a normal mattress. How to tell which you have, the depth each can take, what to buy for a metal-action pull-out, and when to replace the whole bed instead.
The best mattress for a bedside crib: height, edge, and the gap that matters
A bedside crib attaches to your bed and depends on your mattress being the right height with a firm edge. What the crib instructions mean, what mattress depth works, why a soft edge is the problem, and the safe-sleep rules that sit above all of it.
The ones everybody asks.
Where are Chapter mattresses made?
In Yorkshire, England, in the Dewsbury and Batley area that has made beds for over a century. Every mattress is made to order, with the build date on the label.
Are they rolled or delivered flat?
Flat, always. Nothing we make is rolled, compressed or boxed. Two people carry it to the room you choose, unwrap it and place it on the base.
Do they contain fibreglass?
No. We use a woven fire barrier and every build is tested to BS 7177 (low hazard) for domestic use.
What base do I need?
A sprung or platform-top divan, or a slatted frame with slats no more than 7 cm apart and a centre support rail in king and super king. A base with wider gaps or a broken slat will void the guarantee, because it is the most common cause of a dip.
What does tension mean?
Medium or Firm support underneath the same comfort layers. Firm uses 2.0 mm spring wire and a denser base. It is free on The Single Life, The Rebound, The Bad Back Years and The Hotel Bed. Split tension puts one tension on each side of a king or super king.
Is the price the same on Amazon and eBay?
Yes. One price everywhere, delivered. We do not run a permanent sale or invent a higher "was" price.
Be first when we launch
A mattress lasts eight to ten years. We will write to you once when we open, and again when it is time to think about the next one. That is the whole list.
