The Premier Inn mattress: what it is, why it feels the way it does, and the alternatives

Updated 23 September 20263 min readBy the Chapter team, Yorkshire

Premier Inn has advertised its bed for years, promising a good night's sleep and selling the same bed to guests who ask. It is the most-searched hotel mattress in the UK for a reason: a lot of people have slept well on it. Here is what it is, why it works in a hotel, and how to think about it for home.

What it is

Premier Inn's beds are made by Hypnos, the Buckinghamshire maker that holds a Royal Warrant and supplies a large share of the UK hotel trade. The mattress is a pocket-sprung design with a comfort top, built to a hospitality specification, on a firm divan base. Premier Inn sells the mattress and the full bed through its own shop, in domestic sizes. Exact specifications and prices change over time, so check the current listing rather than relying on anything written here.

Why it feels the way it does

Three things, none of them mysterious:

  1. Medium-firm support with a plush top. Hotel mattresses have to suit everyone, so the spring unit is firmer than most people buy for themselves, and the comfort layer on top makes it feel welcoming anyway. Soft on top, firm underneath: the classic hotel formula.
  2. It is not old. Hotels replace mattresses on a schedule, typically every five to eight years, before they sag. The one you slept on was probably younger than the one at home.
  3. Everything around it. Crisp cotton sheets, a heavy duvet, plenty of pillows, a firm base, a dark cool room, and a day where somebody else made the decisions. See ten steps to a hotel bed at home.

Is it right for home?

For a lot of people, yes, and buying the exact bed you slept well on is an honest way to shop. Two things to think about:

  • Contract mattresses are built for durability under heavy use, with firm edges and a firmer feel than the domestic average. If you slept on it for one night and loved it, you probably like medium-firm with a plush top; if you are a side sleeper who likes to sink, check the firmness before you commit.
  • A hotel mattress is one feel for everyone. At home you can choose tension, zoning and top layer for the person who actually sleeps on it, which no hotel can.

The alternatives, if you want the same feel with more choice

What you are looking for is: a substantial pocket-spring unit in medium-firm, a plush top of natural fillings (wool, cotton, a pillow-top), a firm edge, and a maker who will tell you the spec. The traditional UK makers all build this; so do we.

  • Buy the hotel bed if you want the known quantity and have slept on it more than once.
  • Buy a pillow-top from a maker who publishes the spec if you want the feel with a tension choice, natural fillings you can see listed, and flat delivery.
  • Add a topper to a good firm mattress if your current mattress is still supportive and the missing part is the plush top.

Other hotels

Travelodge's bed (the "Dreamer", made by Sleepeezee) is sold too; the international chains sell theirs; boutique hotels mostly buy from Hypnos, Harrison Spinks, Vispring or Sleepeezee's contract ranges. The formula is the same across all of them. See what mattress UK hotels use.

How we built ours

The Hotel Bed is our version of the formula: 2,000 five-zone pocket springs in a side-stitched border, with British wool, cotton felt and silk-blend fibre in a separately stitched pillow-top over plush memory foam, Talalay latex and micro-springs. Medium or Firm tension, split tension in king sizes, every layer listed with its density, delivered flat and free. It is built for a home rather than a corridor of rooms, which means you get to choose the support.

The short version

  • The Premier Inn bed is a Hypnos pocket-sprung mattress with a comfort top, sold to the public.
  • It feels good because it is medium-firm with a plush top, not old, and surrounded by good sheets and a dark room.
  • Buy it if you know you like it; buy a specified pillow-top if you want a choice of tension and to see what is inside.
